Can I brand my studio or teach under my own name?
Yes! Instrux supports white-label studios so you can operate under your own brand — e.g., “Noelle Teaches Music, powered by Instrux Music.”
What do I need to teach on the platform?
Instrux was built specifically for music education. It’s optimized for your computer’s built-in camera and microphone, but you can connect any external mic or camera setup you prefer.
We’ve worked hard to reduce latency to about 100–250 milliseconds with a good connection — faster than most standard video platforms. That said, your internet speed still plays a big role, so a wired or strong Wi-Fi connection is recommended.
How are lessons structured on Instrux Music?
All lessons on Instrux Music are one-on-one. We believe that individual instruction provides the best experience for both teacher and student — personalized, focused, and free from distractions.
What’s expected of instructors during lessons?
- Stay on camera and maintain a professional, distraction-free environment.
- Use respectful, inclusive language.
- Never request personal or sensitive information from minors.
- Follow COPPA and FERPA safety requirements.
How do I get paid?
You can get paid however you like. Add the link to your preferred payment platform (e.g., PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Stripe) in your studio settings.
After each lesson, students automatically receive your payment link. When they click it, your two-way payment tracker switches to “Sent.” Once payment is received, mark it as “Paid.”
Always double-check before marking payment as complete — a student may open the link without actually sending funds.
What happens if I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
All changes are prorated based on how far you are into your billing cycle. You can use the calculator on the Plans & Payments page to see the exact adjustment and next charge date.
What can admins do that instructors can’t?
Admins have full studio management access. They can:
- Schedule lessons for any student or instructor
- Manage payment settings and subscription plans
- Control studio branding and invitations
- Add or remove instructors
If there’s only one admin, they can delete the entire studio. If there are multiple admins, deleting their own account only removes them — not the full studio.
Why can’t I remove another admin from my studio?
To prevent mistakes or disputes, admin removal is restricted. If an admin needs to be removed, email support@instruxmusic.com and our team will help handle it safely.
What is Instructor Matchmaking?
It’s a service that connects qualified instructors with schools looking for music educators — helping fill gaps in arts education while giving instructors more teaching opportunities.
How does matchmaking work?
You provide a recent background check, credentials, and your preferred hourly rate.
If a school needs help, Instrux introduces you — but the school manages hiring and payment directly.
Do I have to upload my qualifications to teach?
No. Uploading your certifications or credentials is completely optional. We only require them if you want to be considered for Instructor Matchmaking opportunities with schools.
Can I upload or share sheet music, recordings, or teaching materials?
Yes, but only if:
- They’re your own work,
- You have permission from the copyright owner, or
- They qualify for educational use under fair-use law.
Instrux does not allow or assume responsibility for copyright infringement.
How can my school or organization use Instrux Music?
Instrux Music was designed to support modern music education — whether you’re filling staff gaps, offering remote instruction, or expanding lesson access after school hours. You can invite your own instructors or connect with vetted educators through our Instructor Matchmaking program.
Can Instrux Music replace or supplement in-person instruction?
Yes. Instrux is built to strengthen — not replace — your music program. Schools can use it to provide one-on-one help for struggling students, extend learning opportunities for advanced players, and maintain continuity when substitute instructors aren’t available.
Our platform was engineered for low-latency video and sound, so virtual lessons feel natural and responsive.
What if our school’s internet connection isn’t perfect?
Instrux was built to perform well even on average Wi-Fi connections. Our platform uses advanced audio and video compression to minimize lag — typically between 100–250 milliseconds, depending on connection speed.
While we can’t eliminate all delay (sound travels fast, but not instantaneously!), a strong connection always makes lessons smoother.
How does pricing work for studios or programs?
Instrux uses a simple, flexible model:
- $49.95/month for the first instructor
- +$24.95/month for each additional instructor (up to 18)
- Capped at $499/month for 19–25 instructors
- Custom pricing available for 25+
All standard features are included — video lessons, scheduling, student management, storage, and branding. Optional add-ons like Discover Listings, Instructor Matchmaking, and Unison will be available soon.
How does billing work for multi-instructor schools or studios?
Billing is automatic and prorated if you change plans mid-cycle. For example, if you add instructors halfway through the month, your subscription adjusts accordingly.
You can always preview exact pricing using the calculator on your Plans & Payments page.
Can we hire instructors directly through Instrux?
You can — through Instructor Matchmaking. We’ll introduce certified, platform-ready instructors, but all hiring and payments happen directly between your school and the instructor.
Who owns the data in our studio?
The school or organization — not Instrux — owns all educational data. Instrux acts as a FERPA-compliant “school official” and only processes data for educational purposes.
How long are lesson recordings saved?
All recordings and lesson materials are stored for 12 months. After that, they’re deleted automatically. Schools and teachers can download or back up any content they need before that date.
How does Instrux comply with student privacy laws?
We comply with FERPA and COPPA. Schools are responsible for verifying parental consent for students under 13, and all lessons involving minors are recorded by default for safety.
What happens if our school account is deactivated?
All data and recordings are permanently deleted within 30 days of deactivation, unless legally required to be retained.
What do I need to take lessons on Instrux Music?
You just need a computer, phone, or tablet with a camera and mic. The platform is optimized for built-in devices, but you can use external equipment if you like.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection — the stronger your connection, the smoother your lesson.
Will my sound ever lag?
Instrux is built for low latency (typically 100–250 milliseconds), but a slight delay can still happen depending on your connection and device.
It’s much faster than most video platforms, but music timing still depends on internet speed and equipment.
How do I pay for my lessons?
After your lesson, your instructor’s payment link will appear automatically. Once you click the link, the payment tracker updates to “Sent.” After the instructor confirms payment, it switches to “Paid.”
Can I talk to my instructor outside lessons?
Yes, if your parent, guardian, or school allows it — but messages should stay about music and learning.
What if I see or hear something inappropriate?
Tell your parent, guardian, or teacher right away. You can also email support@instruxmusic.com directly to report a concern.
Why do I (parent/gaurdian) need to sign a consent form?
Because we comply with COPPA and FERPA, which require verified parental consent before a child under 13 can use the platform.
The consent form ensures that your child’s data and recordings are protected and used only for educational purposes.
How long are my child’s lessons stored?
Lesson recordings, notes, and materials are stored for 12 months from the lesson date. After that, they’re deleted automatically.
You can request deletion sooner by emailing privacy@instruxmusic.com.
Who pays for lessons — me or the school?
That depends on your arrangement. If your child’s instructor works privately, you’ll pay them directly through the payment link they provide.
If the lessons are through a school program, payments may be handled by the school instead.
Can I see or delete my child’s data?
Yes. You can review, correct, or request deletion of your child’s account data at any time by contacting us at privacy@instruxmusic.com.
Is communication monitored?
All lessons are recorded by default for safety, and instructors are prohibited from collecting personal details like addresses or phone numbers.
Communication outside lessons should always stay professional and educational.
How can I create a professional multi-camera setup for lessons?
If you want to show multiple angles — like your hands, instrument, and face — you can do that using a free tool called OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). It lets you combine multiple camera feeds, control layouts, and stream the result directly into your Instrux lesson room.
With OBS, you can create a polished, professional look for your lessons without changing how your students join or view your session.
What is OBS?
OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a free, open-source tool used by creators and educators to control how their video looks. It lets you combine multiple cameras, overlays, and layouts, then send that feed into your Instrux lesson using the OBS Virtual Camera.
How do I download and install OBS?
You can download OBS for free at obsproject.com/download .
macOS: Download the macOS version from the OBS site, open the .dmg, drag OBS into Applications, and allow camera/mic permissions.
Windows: Download the Windows installer (.exe), run the setup, and launch OBS.
Linux: Install using your distribution’s package manager or follow the instructions on the OBS download page.
How do I show multiple camera angles in one view?
In OBS, click the + in Sources → Video Capture Device to add each camera (e.g., face cam, keyboard cam, overhead). Resize and position them in the preview, then click Start Virtual Camera and choose OBS Virtual Camera in your Instrux video settings.
How do I connect OBS to my Instrux lesson?
1) In OBS, add your camera sources in the Sources panel and arrange your layout.
2) Click Start Virtual Camera in OBS.
3) In your Instrux lesson room, open Settings (⚙️) → Video Input and select
OBS Virtual Camera.
4) Your OBS layout will now appear as your camera feed.
Why should I use OBS with Instrux instead of just my regular webcam?
OBS gives you more control and a more professional look while still working seamlessly with Instrux. You can frame your shot how you like, balance lighting, add a second angle, or include simple on-screen labels – all before it reaches your students. It keeps your lesson focused, clear, and consistent without changing how students join or view your session.
How does OBS help improve the learning experience for my students?
With OBS, you can show exactly what students need to see: a close-up of your hands, an overhead of the keys, your embouchure, or your music stand, all in one view. Clear visuals make it easier for students to follow technique, reduce confusion, and save time repeating instructions – especially for younger learners or detailed instrument work.
OBS Virtual Camera isn’t showing up in my video settings
1. Make sure you’ve clicked Start Virtual Camera in OBS.
2. Refresh your browser tab — Chrome and Edge often need a refresh to detect new cameras.
3. Check your browser’s permissions:
• Click the 🔒 icon in your browser’s address bar.
• Make sure Camera and Microphone permissions are set to Allow.
4. If it still doesn’t appear, restart OBS before reopening your Instrux lesson room.
My camera feed is black or frozen
Close other apps using your camera (Zoom, Meet, etc.), then in OBS check each Video Capture Device source to ensure the correct camera is selected. Unplug and reconnect external cameras if needed.
I don’t hear any sound from OBS in my lesson
OBS Virtual Camera only sends video. In your Instrux lesson, choose your microphone directly in Settings (⚙️) → Audio Input (e.g., USB mic or built-in mic).
The video looks laggy or low quality
In OBS, set a reasonable output (for most setups: 1280×720 at 30 FPS), close other heavy apps, and ensure you have a stable connection. Lowering resolution or FPS can improve smoothness.
